Comfort in Mourning (Mt. 5)
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
— Matthew 5:4
“Happy are the sad,” somebody said in an incorrect paraphrase of that verse.
One way to understand Matthew 5:4 is to review Matthew 5:3. Then the sadness here comes from admitting our poverty of spirit.
That kind of sorrow can lead to repentance.
Which means “change.”
St. Paul wrote that godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret. (2 Corinthians 7:10)
Your choice: happiness or regret.
