Then. And Then. And Now.
“For all that has been: Thanks!” wrote Dag Hammarskjold in his book Markings.
You and I glance up to the rearview mirrors of our lives and it might not all be pretty.
But it all shaped us. (Cue the song with the line, “But God blessed the broken road.”)
“To all that shall be: Yes!” concluded Mr. Hammarskjold.
You and I shift our gaze from the mirrors to the windshields of our lives, turn the radio on to a classic rock station as one song fades and another starts. “Yesterday’s over my shoulder, I can’t look backwards too long” becomes “Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow.”
And we both appreciate and appropriate those two lines from that book —
“For all that has been: Thanks!
To all that shall be: Yes!”
— Meanwhile, This is the day the Lord has made! Let’s rejoice and be glad today!” as Psalm 118:24 says.
