New Year’s Eve

December 31, 2020

“Get these three principles fixed in your heart:

“Things eternal are much more considerable than things temporal.

“Things not seen are as certain as things that are seen.

“Upon your present choice depends your eternal lot: choose Christ and his ways and you are blessed forever, but refuse and you are undone forever.”

As we conclude 2020 and get ready to start 2021, I commend to you John Wesley’s Directions for Renewing Our Covenant with God, published in 1781 and the source of those “three principles” and their introduction.

That same source continues with these outlined points —

“Make your choice.

“Embark with Christ.

“Resign and deliver yourself to God in Christ.

“Confirm and complete all this by solemn covenant.”

We’ll pick up there tomorrow. If you want to work ahead, grab your official United Methodist Hymnal and check out number 607, or look online for “A Covenant Prayer in the Wesleyan Tradition.”

And stay safe tonight, please.
