Why Should the Devil Have All the Good Music?

August 14, 2020

“Why do we associate satan with heavy metal?” asks The First Heavy Metal Church of Christ. “For all we know he might like smooth jazz.”

Decades ago, Larry Norman asked in a great song, “Why should the devil have all the good music?”

Music is the current topic of  my current Wednesday Wonderful Words of Life devotional video series.

You’re invited: new episodes are available at 5pm Wednesdays on our 2 churches’ Facebook pages as well as my own FB page. I’ve been doing these since our pandemic restrictions began in March 2020.

Right now we’re working our way through all 7 of John Wesley’s “Rules for Singing” in these Wednesday evening brief devotionals. It’s good to be reminded of our muscial heritage as Wesleyan Followers of Christ.

Even though we currently can’t sing together due to COVID-19 and its attendant restrictions, the day will come again when we can sing together.

Let’s be ready.

By the grace of God, we know the answer to Larry Norman’s question: “Why should the devil have all the good music?”

Let’s do our best to live into that answer,  and let’s be grateful for the opportunity.

I had never heard of Mr Norman until today and a full reading of his Wikipedia entry. So, thanks! Upon some reflection and a review of my iTunes library, it appears I had downloaded his You Can’t Take Away the Lord about 11 years ago. Some timely and relevant lyrics here:
“You just can’t take away the church
    Or the Bible book
Unless you wanna waste your time
You better take a second look
‘Cause you can’t take away my shield
    Can’t take away my sword
And you can’t take away the Lord”
