From the Bar to the Pulpit
There’s an article in the April 2020 issue of Men’s Health that has Tony Hawk giving “advice to his younger self and fellow 50-somethings still getting after it.” There’s a sidebar sketching out advice from a 55 year old man named Mark Salvacion who not long ago switched careers. It reads like this —
WHY? I was a whistleblower and achieved a substantial settlement but realized I wasn’t happy in my career.
HOW? I went to seminary.
ADVICE? Ask the hard questions: Do you feel self-actualized? Are you taking care of your soul? I earn 90 percent less money now, but I’m 90 percent happier.
— His two Advice questions remind me of a question asked by those early Methodists, “How is it with your soul?”
As I often suggest here, apply as needed.
When peace like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll, whatever my lot . . . It is well with my soul.
