Willie & The Beatitudes

February 11, 2020

Willie Deuel is a long-time friend and colleague (and, BTW, until he moved to Seattle, was in The Rivers of Life Clergy Band) (have you booked us to come play at your place yet?).

Recently he was working with The Beatitudes and wrote these, which I share with you here with his graciously expressed permission —

Blessed are the struggling parents raising special needs kids on public aid, for they know sacrificial love.

Blessed is the kid who is always picked last for the team. Blessed is the kid who is never even picked. For they know the true value of inclusion.

Blessed are those who are teased, bullied, and treated with cruelty, for they know the value of respect.

Blessed are those who see death coming, for they know the beauty of life.

— Find yourself in there somewhere?

Find your Job Description today in there somewhere? A calling to be about sacrificial love, inclusion, respect, or appreciating the beauty of life today?

Find yourself wanting to write your own new Beatitude?

Find yourself in Matthew 5:3-12 to get started:

Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.

Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.

Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
