More Than Folk Dancing
Christian S. Wilkey is an exceptionally gifted music teacher.
One week ago today I wrote here about Bum Phillips saying “Two kinds of ballplayers aren’t worth a darn: one who never does what he’s told, and one who does nothin’ except what he’s told.”
That same day Mr. Wilkey wrote the following, which I share with you now with his graciously expressed permission —
At a “Folk Dance” clinic yesterday, I ended up with a partner with a Wesleyan sticker on her badge.
Upon noticing my Millikin sticker she remarked of my dance steps: “Not bad…for a Millikin alum.”
Me in my head: *and you danced exactly how I would imagine a Wesleyan person to do this: robotically, nailing every step but with no room for expressive improvisatory movement fills all the while condescendingly glaring around the room*
Me in real life: “Yeah hahaha.”
These are divided times
— Indeed they are.
Sooooo many directions to go from that brief conversation at the Folk Dance clinic last week.
I’ll let you choose your own, and make your own application.
In other words, I trust you and what my friend the music teacher calls your own expressive improvisatory movement ability.
As Scripture says,
Work out your own salvation
with fear and trembling.
