Beyond Sunsets and Darkness
Sunsets are coming earlier.
And that’s not just an observation of the fact that it’s October and not July. For many people, darkness falls not just earlier but more often in their lives.
Through the Old Testament prophet Isaiah, God gives us a rich promise —
This time of darkness and despair
will not go on forever.
People who walk in darkness
will see a great light.
— That’s from the start of Isaiah 9. And the very next sentence reaches out further deeper —
For those who live in
a land of deep darkness,
a light will shine.
— Long ago, a community of faith taught me this song, and I commend it to you now —
Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus,
Deeper than the mighty rolling sea;
Higher than the mountain, sparkling like a fountain,
All-sufficient grace for even me!
Broader than the scope of my transgressions,
Greater far than all my sin and shame;
Oh, magnify the precious Name of Jesus,
Praise His Name!
— Today and this week and beyond, let’s do three things with this reality:
1. Be thankful for it.
2. Remember it.
3. Live into it.
