When Did Open Season on These People Start?

September 22, 2019

“They attacked me personally and they attacked my family,” Barlow said. “I run into some of the parents and they still trash-talk me to my face.”

And then there’s this: “High school associations around the country report officiating shortages so severe that basketball schedules are being condensed and football games are being shifted to Thursdays and Saturdays.

“A survey revealed that 70% of new officials quit within three years, pushed off largely by abuse.”

I’m sure glad we don’t have a comparable crisis in churches.

And I’m really thrilled that we don’t treat church leaders and pastors like that.

Oh, wait.

In recent years, some local church Nominations Committees have been having trouble getting leaders.

Many denominations are experiencing a shortage of pastors.

Once upon a time, “having roasted preacher with our fried chicken” was a line that brought a knowing smile, maybe even a chuckle. And was even often used as a corrective around the dinner table.

Back before that, someone had this idea of how to treat one another —

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

This stuff bothers me.

You, too?
