Bible Abuse
These are but a few of the Bible verses have been horrifically used to justify totalitarianism, slavery, abuse of women, poverty and blaming all Jews for the death of Jesus —
Therefore whoever resists authority resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. —Romans 13:2.
For you always have the poor with you, but you will not always have me. —Matthew 26:11.
So when Pilate saw that he could do nothing, but rather that a riot was beginning, he took some water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood; see to it yourselves.” Then the people as a whole answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” —Matthew 27:24-25.
Slaves, obey your earthly masters with fear and trembling, in singleness of heart, as you obey Christ … —Ephesians 6:5.
Wives, be subject to your husbands as you are to the Lord. —Ephesians 5:22.
With gratitude to The Wired Word for that list, I have to wonder what happened to this other sometimes nagging piece of Scripture:
“Do your best
to present yourself to God
as one approved,
a worker who does not need to be ashamed
and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
— 2nd Timothy 2:15
