Give Us Grace To

December 20, 2018

Merciful God,
you sent your messengers the prophets
to preach repentance
and prepare the way for our salvation.
Give us grace to heed their warnings
and forsake our sins,
that we may greet with joy
the coming of Jesus Christ, our Redeemer;
who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.

That’s an Advent prayer from our official hymnal, page 201.

Give us grace to are four words that I’ve often zoomed by when praying this.

Give us grace to is a phrase that takes us to the heart of some solid theology, which has perhaps been best expressed in this song —

Every promise we can make,
Every prayer and step of faith,
Every difference we can make
Is only by His grace.

Every mountain we will climb,
Every ray of hope we shine,
Every blessing left behind
Is only by His grace.

(chorus)
Grace alone which God supplies, Strength unknown He will provide,
Christ in us, Our cornerstone, We will go forth in grace alone.

Every soul we long to reach,
Every heart we hope to teach,
Everywhere we share His peace
Is only by His grace.

Every loving word we say,
Every tear we wipe away,
Every sorrow turned to praise
Is only by His grace.

— As you might have heard me say and celebrate before, “God’s still in business.”

By the grace of God, I’ll see you back here tomorrow.
