God’s Own Choosing
“So often we subtly assume that because God chooses us, everyone else falls outside the privileged circle of divine protection. Our current social and political conversations are rife with this kind of assumption.
“Yet (Psalm 124:1-5) doesn’t take us that far. The poem focuses our attention sharply on the moment of knowing we have come through something awful, through no action of our own.”
That’s what Rev. Mary Earle writes in Disciplines 2018 on page 322.
Grab your Bible or go online here and check out Psalm 124:1-5 and see if she’s right in the second paragraph I’ve quoted here.
Is the emphasis in that Psalm on us being chosen or on God being God?
In his song A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, Martin Luther teaches us to sing,
Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right one on our side,
the one of God’s own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he!
