She was hospitalized at age 6 for depression, and again after her daughter’s birth, and yet again after her mother’s death.

This Close to Happy: A Reckoning with Depression is an articulate memoir by Daphne Merkin.

“I have often wondered whether it is depression’s very failure to fit into a neat, easily recognizable category that contributes to the ongoing stigma that attaches to it,” she writes.
