John Vidakovich is a long time close friend, confidant, colleague and more. We’ve weathered many storms together. He recently wrote this, and it’s with his gracious permission that I share this —

It was the perfect church until…
the divorce
the diagnosis
the addiction
the incarceration
the depression
the coming out
the question
the uncomfortable truth spoken aloud.

It was a flurry of Bible verses
exhortations to have more faith
advice on how to have a preferred outcome
a five step program.

Even worse…
conversations became awkward
relationships became stilted
encounters became avoided.

we give others permission to doubt, question, and feel
we open the lock on the box we keep the Holy Spirt in
we walk with people instead of talk to people

we are a clanging gong full of cheap Jesus advice that only makes people feel less connected

we can cut each other some slack and love each other, warts and all.

It’s pretty clear: “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” — John 13:34, 35
