We Were at Her Husband’s Funeral One Week Ago Today

March 3, 2018

We were at her husband’s funeral one week ago today.

Mary was in the front row, in her wheelchair, slumped to the right with her eyes closed. I could see her from where I sat up front with her pastor.

Jamey was singing his third and final song, The Old Rugged Cross.

When he reached the last verse, Mary began moving her lips a bit.

By the the third line, it was evident she was trying to sing along, “…then He’ll call me some day, to my home far away….”

And on the last line had caught up with Jamey and was almost lip syncing, “…where His glory forever I’ll share!”

When Mary and Jamey hit the chorus, it was a duet only Mary, the angels, and her late husband could hear. Still slumped to the right, eyes still closed, she smiled as she whispered, “So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross, till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, and exchange it some day for a crown.”

Linda the organist finished the final chord of the song.

Mary nodded and said clearly, “Thank you.”

Time stopped.

It was a holy moment, as some of my friends say.

We had church, as another group of friends say.

We were at her husband’s funeral one week ago today, and Mary blessed us.
