They’re GOOD People!

December 2, 2017

Last weekend I was honored to be in the pulpit of Belleville (IL) Union United Methodist Church. I’m officially on staff there part time doing Visitation and Other Good Stuff. And yup, I love it.

In the course of that sermon I quoted the late, great Rev. Dr. Eugene M. Seaman, one of my many pastoral mentors. One of many excellent pieces of advice he gave me, usually in the form of sound bytes, was this: “The Methodists! They’re GOOD people!”

What I didn’t mention last weekend in worship, because it didn’t really fit with the rest of my sermon, was what he said next.

Here, then, in its entirety, is the actual quote from my meeting notes while sitting in his office in May of 1986:

“The Methodists!

They’re GOOD people!

Stay outa their way!”

He was right.

The longer I’ve been in parish ministry, the more I see how right he was about the people in churches I’ve been honored to serve.

And the more I’ve seen how we pastors can get in the way of that.

Meet me back here tomorrow for more about this.
