People Just Like You

October 2, 2017

“Wait, Joe! Don’t you follow the news?!”

Sure do. Probably now more than ever. So let’s jump in here together.

A couple of weeks ago I tripped over something in a devotional book. It’s published annually and I used to give a copy to all church staff members for Christmas back when I was their senior/lead/directing/whatever pastor. It has a different writer every week, which I think really keeps things fresh and healthy.

Okay, back to what I read there a couple of weeks ago —

Meditate on the mighty works of God within your family, your community, your workplace, or around the world. Be present and mindful of God’s great miracles that still occur today.

— Yesterday we stopped at the within your family part.

Next in line is your community.

“Wait, Joe, hold up there. Don’t you follow the news?!”

Yup. And when I look around my community, or even better my various communities, and see with eyes of faith and consider things beyond the surfaces, I start to notice that God really is at work in the midst of stuff.

What about in whatever image comes to mind as being your community?

Our Scriptures and our Wesleyan tradition tell us that God is very much at work there, and usually through people.

People just like you.

Hear again these good words: Be present and mindful of God’s great miracles that still occur today.
