This is God

December 18, 2016

Merciful God,

you sent your messengers the prophets

to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation:

Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins,

that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer;

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,

now and for ever. Amen.

Prayer for Advent, United Methodist Hymnal, 201

What time is it?

(My favorite answer to that question is, “You mean right now?”)

It’s the 4th Sunday of Advent.

We live somewhere between what has happened and what shall happen.

God sent prophets long ago to tell us about Messiah whom we know as Christ who was born in human form a couple thousand years ago and yet currently lives and reigns and will come again and wow we just covered millennia and eternity and that’s big time stuff. No pun intended.

This is God we’re talking about here.

The One who is far beyond our comprehension, as Philippians 2:7 says, left that Holy Mysteriousness  and dressed up like a helpless human baby.

This is God we’re talking about here.

As we approach Christmas this final week of Advent, let’s take a moment to remember The One it’s all about.

As colleague Mike Slaughter famously says to you and me, “It’s not your birthday anyway.”

This is God we’re talking about here.
