That 3-Letter Word: Elusive?

December 17, 2016

Merciful God,

you sent your messengers the prophets

to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation:

Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins,

that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer;

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,

now and for ever. Amen.

Prayer for Advent, United Methodist Hymnal, 201

Ready or not, one week from today’s Christmas Eve.

Does that reality fill you with joy or not?

If not, a few things to consider —

1.What might you need to ease up on between now and then, so that you can have that joy?

2. What would you be able to increase, so that you can better experience the joy we’ve been asking for with this classic prayer these past three weeks?

3. Simply put, what would help you greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ?

I’d love to hear from you about any of this, and by the grace of God we’ll see each other back here tomorrow.

  1. Spot on! Thanks, you gave me the opening line to my sermon tomorrow!

  2. Reading this 2-1/2 days later, give me the heebie jeebies as I sit among unfinished Christmas gift projects as well as having promised my granddaughter we will bake Christmas cookies this week (a project I haven’t tackled in years, but0, I am so looking forward to the event. Here, I am getting my solitude to carry on. I always come to you, here, for that! Focus, completion, and enjoying the smiles on Christmas Day is what will bring me joy!
