Strength
I look up to the mountains;
does my strength come from mountains?
No, my strength comes from God,
who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.
— Psalm 121, The Message version
The Rockies. The Alps. The Appalachians. That other mountain range that you’re thinking of, too.
They’re pretty. They’re big. They’re pretty big.
In the Middle East, when what we know as Psalm 121 was being written and sung, their mountains were obstacles. Their paths could be treacherous. Their valleys were filled with dangers.
Mountains were some of the most formidable things known.
And yet, even bigger and stronger was the One who had made those very mountains.
“Does my strength come from mountains?” Psalm 121 asks and then immediately answers, “No, my strength comes from God, who made heaven, and earth, and mountains.”
That One made everything, indicated by “heaven and earth” and even made those “mountains.”
Where are you getting your strength today?
