How to Be Adventurous in Following Jesus

September 28, 2016

“Sometimes, maybe too often,” writes Andrew Roberts, “to be adventurous in following Jesus means being involved in very ordinary activities which nevertheless push us to the limits.”

He drops that bombshell on page 28 of his book Holy Habits. I’m finding that it often reads like a poised scalpel with me on the operating table.

This British author draws a big circle. He includes those everyday responsbilibites that become annoyances. He punches through our pretense of wanting to do something great for God…you know, something, someday….

The first three versions of the Gospel of Christ Jesus in our Bibles all have Jesus saying we’re to take up our own crosses (Matthew 16:24,25; Mark 8:34,35; Luke 9:23,24). Luke’s version goes on to include the word daily in that invitation.

What “very ordinary acitivities” will “push us to the limits” today?

Pray that we see and understand them as opportunities “to be adventurous in following Jesus.”

Because Christ himself still calls us to do that daily.

“Sometimes, maybe too often, to be adventurous in following Jesus means being involved in very ordinary activities which nevertheless push us to the limits.”
