What Will God Do Next?

September 3, 2016

If we confess our sins,

God who is faithful and just

will forgive us our sins

and cleanse us from all unrightousness.

— 1st John 1:9

We confess.

God forgives.

But there’s one more part: God will cleanse us from all unrightousness.

Last Sunday afternoon we had a Cardboard Boat Regatta as part of our District Clergy and Family Picnic. Our intrepid skipper was Capt. Eric Baldyga, and you can see pictures of him and our boat on my Facebook page. You’ll notice that our vessel had four names: Godspeed, Centenary Yacht Club, The Hot Mess, and Our Boat

Lauching the boat involved getting into the water, and let’s just say that after the launch Patty and I had some sand and stuff from the lake on us. Eric was covered in it. Especially after Our Boat began taking on water without going more than a couple of feet from the beach.

But Eric didn’t sink with the boat. Eric didn’t come apart with the boat as it collapsed. Eric simply got out, stood up, and walked ashore.

Eric, Patty and I washed the sand and stuff off. And got on with the rest of the afternoon

How does 1st John 1:9 put it — like this? —

If we confess our sins,

God who is faithful and just

will forgive us our sins

and leave us drenched in our muck and mess.

Or like this? —

If we confess our sins,

God who is faithful and just

will forgive us our sins

and cleanse us from all unrightousness.
