Starbucks or Mel’s Diner?

January 29, 2015

Some people hang out at coffee shops named “Mel’s Diner”

and chat with those at the tables around them.

Some people hang out places named “Starbucks”

and chat with people miles away through the internet.

Friend and colleague Gene Ramsey wrote that, and gave me permission to quote him.  Gene articulates what I’ve experienced but have been unable to say succinctly.  I still miss The Abe Lincoln Cafe, run by George and Betty and their daughter Priscilla; that home of the bottomless cup of coffee was my primary Satellite Office when I was first out of seminary.

Had lots of unscheduled pastoral visits there.

Whether we’re at Mel’s or The Abe or online, some fundamental things apply.  From long ago comes this directive —

Let your conversation

be always full of grace.

Colossians 4:6
