$1,000 in Quarters

March 16, 2014

We think giving our all to the Lord is like taking $l,000 bill and laying it on the table– “Here’s my life, Lord. I’m giving it all.”

I believe I first heard this from Fred Craddock.

But the reality is that Christ sends us to the bank for change.

Fred was a preaching and worship instructor at our United Methodist seminary in Atlanta.

Jesus has us cash in the $l,000 bill for lots of quarters.

He was a Quaker.

Then our Lord sends us out.

He was an incredibly popular teacher, speaker and writer.

God sends us through life to put 25 cents here and 50 cents there.

But above all else he was a preacher of The Gospel.

Listen to the neighbor kid’s troubles instead of saying, “Get lost.’

He made a difference.

Go to a committee meeting.

He understood students.

Help an old man with shaky hands in a nursing home with a cup of coffee.

He helped us see beyond the invisibly-walled academic ghetto.

Usually giving our life to Christ isn’t glorious.

His stories, as good as they were, told way more than just the words ever said.

It’s done in all those little acts of love, 25 cents at a time.

He zoomed from the big picture to details and back again.

It would be easy to go out in a flash of glory…

He kept it all in focus.

…it’s harder to live the Christian life little by little over the long haul.
