Lively Up Yourself: A Prayer for All Day

June 29, 2013

New every morning is your love, great God of light,

and all day long you are working for good in the world.

Stir up in us desire to serve you,

to live peacefully with our neighbors,

and to devote each day to your Son,

our Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord.  Amen.

— page 878, The United Methodist Hymnal, current edition

“Lively up yourself,” sang the late great Bob Marley.

It’s one of my many favorites from his massive catalog of Jamaican reggae classics.

Like so many other things in life, however, there’s only so much we can do  ourselves. We have limitations.  We are well acquainted with entropy.

This prayer addresses our primal need for God’s help with the words, Stir up in us as the focus shifts to our agenda —

Stir up in us desire to serve you,

to live peacefully with our neighbors,

and to devote each day to your Son

our Savior, Jesus Christ the Lord.  Amen.

The New Testament has these words of encouragement: Fan into flame the gift of God which is within you. (2nd Timothy 1:6)

Roll all of that together and you have a potent combination today: asking God to stir up specific desires within you, then breathing life into the gift of God within you, and taking action to “lively up yourself.”

Prayer and action…together…hmmmm….see you back here soon.
