Is the New Really Here?

April 16, 2012

Easter, Resurrection, New Life —all those things we sing about and talk about and wonder about— they really do matter.

One of my favorite promises is from our old friend St. Paul,

If anyone is in Christ,

the new creation has come:

The old has gone, the new is here!

(2nd Corinthians 5:17, NIV)

It was over a week ago that we were celebrating Easter.  To use Paul’s language, what has arrived, what has gone, and what is here?

I believe there’s much more of a process involved in all of this.  Maybe a better way to say it is that we ourselves are in the midst of a process.  We used to call that process Sanctification.

For me, one simple question pulls all of this into focus: “What’s changing?”

At the General Conference that was held in St. Louis years ago, a lady bishop said something to the affect that we should be careful where we draw lines because we never know when God will ask us to move them. I have remembered that often and found it to be very true. I have moved mine often as I grow in grace.
